How to make a city vibrant and then communicate that vibrancy in a compelling way is the constant job of urban leaders. David Plettner advises city, foundation, and arts leaders on how to use the arts to create a vibrant city. He is principal with the Cultural+Planning Group based in Los Angeles where he has just completed a study for the San Diego Foundation on how to increase arts activity and support in that city.

Dick Fleming is president and CEO of the , the bi-state region's lead economic development organization, where he has just launched a new brand for that city, Perfectly Centered, Remarkably Connected. Smart City takes a look at the story behind the tag line.
