Trained equally in architecture and the studio arts, Daniel Mihalyo says he practically leapt at the opportunity to help shape the outcome of public art in the right-of-way when he was offered the chance to become the Seattle Department of Transportation Artist-in-Residence. As an arts advocate, urban enthusiast, author and architect-trained native of Seattle, he saw an unusual opportunity to re-define the parameters for creativity in the city's pedestrian environment. With us to talk about the program are Daniel Mihalyo and Patrice Gillespie Smith, chief of staff for the Seattle Department of Transportation, which manages the artist in residence program.
Also with us is artist Daniel Goods from the Jet Propulsion Labs. Creating a pipe organ out of soda pop bottles, gardening at the Huntington Gardens and designing four-dimensional objects led Dan to his current position at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. There, he is developing ways of communicating JPL missions to the general public. He has been working with the Terrestrial Planet Finder Mission, which hopes to find another planet like earth.
We'll talk about the impact of art and artists with Dan Goods and Daniel Mihalyo on the next Smart City.
