About the Show

Betsy Lieberman is founder and executive director of AIDS Housing of Washington and winner of the Leadership for a Changing World award from the Ford Foundation.Ê Fifteen years ago, Betsy was hired by the Seattle-King County public health department to develop a plan for meeting the long-term care needs of people with AIDS.Ê Out of that nine-month planning effort was born AIDS Housing of Washington, and Betsy became its executive director.Ê But plans for the organizationÕs first housing project were met with fear and organized opposition Ð a surprising reaction by a city generally credited with tolerance.Ê Opposition was eventually overcome, and today, Betsy has created the National AIDS Housing Leadership Institute for AIDS housing directors.

Cassandra Shaylor is co-director of Justice Now, an Oakland, CA.-based organization engaged in advocacy for women in prison.Ê Founded only two years ago, Justice Now is the nationÕs first legal training program to serve imprisoned women.Ê The program is focused on 8,000 prisoners in the two largest womenÕs prisons in the world, both located in Chowcilla, CA.Ê Its mission is to provide women prisoners with legal assistance and information, and to organize campaigns against inhumane treatment within the penal system.Ê

Betsy Lieberman and Cassandra Shaylor, winners of the Ford Foundation's Ê"Leadership for a Changing World," are our guests this week on "Smart City."
