About the Show

Hans Butzer is a principal with his wife Torrey in the Butzer Design Partnership, now in Oklahoma City.Ê Together with colleague Sven Berg, they designed the Oklahoma City National Memorial.Ê It is a moving, but hopeful tribute to the victims, the survivors and their rescuers of the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building, April 19, 1995, an attack that left 168 dead.

The Butzers won the commission to design the Oklahoma City project while working in Berlin.Ê They moved back to the U.S. to design the project, and after completing his masters at Harvard, Hans moved to Oklahoma City to oversee the projectÕs completion.Ê He now teaches architecture at the University of Oklahoma.

Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk is a principal with husband Andres Duany in Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company or DPZ, as the company is known.Ê Since its founding in 1980, DPZ has completed designs for more than 250 new and existing communities.Ê Their work has exerted a major influence on the practice and direction of urban planning in the United States.

DPZ's projects have received numerous awards, including two National AIA Awards and two Governor's Urban Design Awards for Excellence.Ê The firm's early project of Seaside, Florida was the first authentic new town to be built successfully in the United States in the past fifty years.Ê Time Magazine selected Seaside as one of the 10 "Best of the Decade" achievements in the field of design.Ê With her husband, Elizabeth is a co-founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, co-author of the important book, "Suburban Nation" and recipient last year of the Vincent Scully prize by the National Building Museum in recognition of her contributions to the American built environment.Ê Elizabeth is also Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Miami.
